Safety and river code
The safety of participants and other users of the river are our prime priority at all times and we therefore insist on the following general safety measures, which are general common sense:
All participants will have to attend the safety briefing and activity instruction before being allowed in the canoe.
Please ensure you arrive 20 minutes before your hire time to provide equipment and briefing.
Always wear the buoyancy aids
Do not use the canoe to jump into the river to swim at any time
Dogs are welcome but no buoyancy aids will be provided and they must be supervised at all times.
Although the canoes are stable you must take due care and diligence when standing up as your balance will of course be affected.
No fishing is allowed unless you have obtained the appropriate rod licence and only fish in allowed areas. Many parts within the river are banked by private properties and fishing may not be allowed. It is up to the hirer to find out the areas they can fish in with permission.
Stopping points. Please note that you should only stop up at public moorings or public areas. Ask us for further information on where these are. Make sure that the canoe is not at risk of floating away and tied where appropriate properly
Although the Old River Nene is not a tidal fed river and therefore quite constant in terms of flow, it is still good practice to ensure you are prepared for all weathers and conditions and we advise you always to bring with the following items
- A long sleeved top
- Waterproof jacket
- Suntan lotion and a hat
- Change of clothing and small towel
- Mobile phone
- A watch
When passing oncoming boats always pass on the port side (if it was a road, drive on the right!)
Treat other river users with respect including fishermen/women. Watch out for their lines and avoid them.
Take all your litter away with you. Do not throw debris into the river. Please follow the Countryside Code. See http://www.countrysideaccess.gov.uk/things_to_know/countryside_code
